TO: Beijing Conference Action and Resource Network FROM: Judy Kramer UPDATE #14 JULY 23, 1997 Summer seems a slow time for events, but women "keep on movin' forward." This Update features notices sent in by women in the Network. ADD ANOTHER WEB SITE In response to the list of women's web sites published in Update #12, Lorene Garrett-Browder, , of the Santa Cruz area has alerted me to the web site for the organization, Women as Allies, . Women as Allies is a multiracial, multicultural group of women committed to increasing sensitivity among women's organizations so that women can be successful at working inclusively. Workshops, presentations, and lectures are available, as well as Lorene's book, titled "Sista'-- Women in the Tapestry of Life, " ($14.95). In addition, the web site has an extensive listing of resources and links. Here is how Lorene describes her book: "Sista is a book about women and their struggles and successes in a world that screams great demands and hands out enduring challenges. As you read Sista you will recognize the profound impact of mother and daughter relationships, which, because of their intensity, affect us for our entire lives. Women, both past and present, have not looked to each other for emotional support. We must realize that this emotional support is necessary for our survival. It is in this struggle for emotional survival that we often lose touch with those we love, those who are dearest to us. This struggle destroys a natural part of our femininity, our ability to bond. Yet we are determined to do our best to accomplish the feats of being female." GIRLNET ONLINE Mary Jean Pramik and her daughters, Danika and Madeleine, attended the Beijing Conference (the girls were aged 12 and 10 at the time). They would like the Network to know the e-mail address for their organization/publication, GirlNet: < girlnet@aol.com>. BAY AREA ARTIST TO ATTEND CONGRESS ON VIOLENCE Artist Ruth Waters, who attended the Beijing Conference as a member of the Women's Caucus for Art, will be attending the upcoming Congress on Violence in Dublin, Ireland, next month. Incidentally, she learned of it through Helen Young's note in an Update a year ago. She will be taking her Domestic Violence sculpture "Home, $weet Home," but none of the foundations she applied to have come up with support money. Having sold some sculptures this year, she will be paying her own way but could use some assistance covering the $4,000 it will cost to have the Domestic Violence sculpture crated and shipped over and back. If anyone could help out, donations would be most gratefully accepted. Ruth's snailmail address is 1870 Ralston Ave., Belmont, CA, 94002. Her e-mail address is . ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This online update, published weekly in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, covers events, resources, and information related to follow-up to the UN Fourth World Conference on Women and the issues covered in the Platform for Action document.
