From Judi Clark of WomensWork.org
As you know, there are a considerable number of organizations working for the betterment and education of women and girls. These organizations are developing web sites, mentorships and training programs, hands-on experiences, and a wide range of other exciting projects.
Knowing how much we hate to reinvent the wheel, we thought we'd cut to the chase and create organization around our efforts. By bringing members of these various organizations together and striving to find ways to avoid the duplication of efforts, leverage each others' work, and collaborate on projects, we will become stronger and move even further towards achieving our goals.
Some of you are from groups/interests in California, but many are from out of state. If you're coming a long distance, we may be able to help you find places to stay (friends, hotels). For those of you driving into SF, we will help organize carpools. Contact Judi Clark for lodging and car pool information (see below).

Adriana Farkouh of San Jose is one of the members of Capacitar who will be traveling to Guatemala at the end of this month to share healing arts and a retreat with grassroots women leaders, teachers, refugees, widows of violence, and campesinas. Those of us who attended the NGO Forum in Hairou, China, two years ago remember well the Healing Tent which Capacitar ran.
The group will be collecting various items to give the women--sewing notions; materials for schools, offices, and farm projects; medical and health supplies; shampoos and soaps; and cash. Checks, made out to Capacitar, and supplies can be sent to Adriana Farkouh, 1896 Montemar Way, San Jose 95112. Phone: 408-559-4933. E-mail adrianaf@aol.com
The participation of women in philanthropy has changed greatly in the last twelve years. The Women's Funding Network, dedicated to "changing the face of philanthropy," is an umbrella organization for public and private women's foundations and federations. Its purpose is to promote the development and growth of women's funds that empower women and girls. When it began in 1985, there were 20 member organizations nationwide. Now the number is 77 and growing. Listed below are the 16 which have web sites. Check them out to get a sense of the creative efforts being undertaken by and for women and girls. For information about other women's funds, contact the Women's Funding Network at 612-227-1911, e-mail wfn@wfnet.org.
