ONLINE UPDATE #7 April 6, 1997 Attending the Mills College Women's Leadership Conference on Saturday was like taking a mini-trip back into the women's culture of the Beijing Conference. Below are some of the events I learned about. A special event is noted first, Hoang Taing's inspiring "Run for a Million." SPECIAL EVENT Starting at the Presidential Summit on Volunteerism in Philadelphia in April, activist Hoang Taing will run across the US in 120 days, culminating her effort with a Labor Day weekend closing ceremony in San Francisco's UN Plaza. Throughout the run, Hoang plans to mobilize one million young people to give one hour of volunteer service to our nation and their communities. Hoang is a survivor of the Cambodian "killing fields," which destroyed her parents and family. As a memorial to her parents' ability to always be positive, and in appreciation of her new homeland, she has created "Run for a Million" to motivate young people to think positively and serve their communities. The effort is being administered by The United Way and the Volunteer Center. For more information, or to make a contribution, contact Darien Louie, Senior VP, The United Way, 510-238-2410.
